Sketch or Sketchy?

WIP Sketch for Fruit 4 Friends character art, Nov.2022

Ready for a hard truth? if You’re still sketching every design idea you have BEFORE you get on illustrator, you’re slow as F*ck on illustrator.

I’ve never been a big believer of having to sketch out ideas before getting into a design. It was something that was pushed on me in art school and while I do think for some people it may be helpful, I might dare to say that it’s a waste of time. please know I say this with a bit jealousy and a lot of HYPOCRISY - I doodle here and there and if I was as good of an illustrator as half of the people I seem to see on tiktok, I might think differently about this entire topic. though A burning question remains - is it sketchy to not sketch? Do “real designers” always have to show their work like this is a 3rd grade math test? I’ve worked on projects where hours were wasted trying to noodle an idea on procreate where in 5 minutes I was able get a solid concept down on adobe illustrator. Sure, this is case-by-case (per project and designer), but in 99% of my work I’d rather save my time.

moral of the story, get faster when designing. while you’re doodling, AI is taking your next client - but not if I take them first.
